Recently, a ‘bizarre’ buried structure shocked entire Russia. A lot of people believe that the collapsed structure was one of the ancient churches ever built in the conservative country.

Scientists discovered the mysterious structure setting beneath the perimeter of the fortress of Naryn-Kala. Based on their initial assessments, the 36-foot-deep (11 meters) cross-shaped edifice stood thousands of years under the earth’s core unnoticed.

According to the press release of Russia’s MISIS National University, the structure could have been used as a water reservoir during the A.D. 300. Or if it is not a water tank, there’s also a big possibility that it was used to be a Zoroastrian fire temple.

To discard unfounded speculations and doubts, a team of researcher decided to employ the power of science. They want to trace the history of the building more accurately using the cosmic rays. The scientists are quite sure of the efficiency of the cosmic rays since they used the same technology when they studied the Great Pyramid of Giza. They stressed that they would use the might of the “muon radiography.” The said process uses cosmic ray muons to generate three-dimensional images of volumes using the information contained in the Coulomb. The cosmic rays, on the other hand, are high-energy radiation waves that originate from an unknown part of the solar system. These powerful rays penetrate the earth, but as they landed on the planet’s top atmosphere, they eventually blasted, and then the muon particles are formed. These particles enter the earth’s atmosphere, and scientists use them to calculate dates and draw 3D images of ancient buildings.

But despite the advancement of science, the researchers admitted that it has limitations. They disclosed that they could only generate the picture of the crossed-shaped structure if it has at least 5% density discrepancy.  When there’s a difference in density, this means that there are varied muons deposited in the building. These distinct deposits will be used to produce a 3D model.
